Looking at Kinds of Dice
It is hard to imagine gambling without dice. Along with playing cards, dice are one of the primary instruments used in almost all games of chance. Dice are typically small cubes marked with dots on its six faces, but there are variations in what materials are used in making dice, how they are played and how they look as well.
Dice have already been used even in the ancient times. The materials used by the early people in manufacturing dice were typically found in nature. Artifacts of the early forms of dice dated 40,000 years ago were made from the bone of sheep or dog. Wood, fruit pits, seeds and clay were also used by the people living in early civilizations to manufacture dice, whereas in modern times dice are usually made of plastic.
The ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome and Egypt show evidences of dice playing among its peoples, although dice were believed to have originated from Asia, specifically in China. The standard appearance of a die - that is, with six faces marked with dots numbering from one to six - was already in use in early civilizations. The placement of the dots on a piece of die before was the same as it is today. The total number of dots on two opposite faces always adds up to seven. The face of the die with two dots is always opposite the one with five dots, the side with one dot is opposite the face with six dots, while the faces with three and four dots are opposite each other as well.
But dice are not only marked by dots. An example of another kind of dice is a poker die. While a poker die has six sides like the standard die, its faces resemble playing cards. Poker dice feature an ace, king, queen, jack, ten and nine in its sides. Like in a regular poker game where playing cards are used, poker dice also aims to create combinations that are similar to the ranking of hands in poker. Five pieces of dice are used in a single throw in poker dice so that combinations can be made.
Dice can also be modified to change its number of sides. The more sides a die has, the more possible outcomes and combinations it can create. Dice having as much as 20 sides have been invented as well.
Dice have transcended time and place in providing gambling entertainment for mankind. Whatever the type of dice one may use, it remains to be an irreplaceable component of almost all games of chance.
